“Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’” ~Matthew 14:28-32
This is one of those amazing encounters individuals and groups had with Jesus as recounted in the Bible. Jesus walking on water! Impossible we say. And then helping Peter to do the same! Even more impossible. And rescuing him when he faltered! Impossible yet again! This painting by Yongsung Kim, from the perspective of the sinking Peter, is such a tender, personal and intimate portrait of Jesus: still impossibly standing on water, but reaching down to save each of us from drowning. Sometimes it seems like the “impossible” doesn’t happen anymore. Or does it? Join Rev. Dr. Paul Kern as we worship and look at how to encounter Jesus doing the impossible, today, in our lives and ministries. Perhaps it is as “simple” as listening for Jesus’ voice, acting out his commands, keeping our focus on him, and grasping to the hand reaching down to us.
