Beginning with Ash Wednesday this week, we have entered the season of Lent. Just as Advent is the season of preparation prior to Christmas, Lent is a season of preparation prior to Easter. Its 40 days commemorate the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert fasting and praying in preparation for his Earthly ministry. Yes, between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday there are actually 47 days, but the Sundays didn’t count for fasting, which Christians traditionally did during this time. Historically, they were also meant to “give alms”, wear sackcloth, and spend much time in prayer and self-denial. John Calvin however, didn’t have have a lot of use for these rules and actually called the strict practices of Lent “superstitious observance”. Now we use this time to reflect, perhaps to join a Lenten study, and prepare out hearts for the glorious celebration of Easter.
