Out of the depths
have I called you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice;
let your ears consider well
the voice of my supplication.

“For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. …for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, ‘Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’”       –Ephesians 5:8-14

The Rev. Dr. Stephen McAllister will once again be leading our worship this morning. Stephen is the founder and senior minister of Spirit Renewal Ministries – a non-denominational ministry serving faith communities in Canada and overseas. He has just recently returned from a mission trip to Kenya and we are pleased to welcome him back to Canada and to St. Andrew’s.

He will be speaking about being light in the world, using the story of Jesus healing the blind man at the pool of Siloam to get us there.

“At the Well” Mike Moyers
“The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?’ Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans. Jesus answered her,
‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, “Give me a drink”, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.’ The woman said to him, ‘Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?’ Jesus said to her,
‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.’
The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.’…
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.’
The woman said to him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming’ who is called Christ. ‘When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.’ Jesus said to her,
‘I am he, the one who is speaking to you.’
John 4: 5-42 (selected verses)

The Reverends Paul and Heather Kern have provided pulpit supply to our congregation twice a month in this time of transition, and we gratefully welcome them back again this week. Rev. Paul will be giving a sermon about Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. This is one of Paul’s favourite stories in the New Testament as it deals with how encountering Jesus shatters all our expectations. Our expectations are so often dictated by social norms, religious norms and personal norms. But God’s grace is so much bigger and better. We see in each encounter how Jesus is so much more interested in Restoration rather than in labelling or punishing.

Join us as we delver deeper into this well known story.

“Be a Light Unto the World” Lucie Nisson. 1998. from the Interfaith Centre for Spiritual Growth.

“Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called—that you might inherit a blessing. For
         ‘Those who desire life
           and desire to see good days,
           let them keep their tongues from evil
           and their lips from speaking deceit;
           let them turn away from evil and do good;
           let them seek peace and pursue it.
           For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
           and his ears are open to their prayer.
           But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.’”
1 Peter 3:8-12

The Reverends Paul and Heather Kern have provided pulpit supply to our congregation twice a month in this time of transition, and we gratefully welcome them back again this week. Rev. Heather will be giving a sermon about spiritual growth, entitled “Therefore. Part 2”. Come and join us as we continue our Lenten journey to joyful Eastertide.

This is also the first Sunday in March, and as is the tradition at St. Andrew’s, we will be celebrating Holy Communion. We continue to provide individual, sealed Communion packets as you enter the sanctuary. Alternatively, we encourage you to bring your elements from home to use during the service. And if you are joining online, perhaps take a moment before the service to prepare a cup and some bread, so that you may commune with us.

Follow me, Satan (Temptation of Jesus Christ).  Ilya Repin. 1901-1903

“Therefore, just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.”
Romans 5:18-21

Beginning with Ash Wednesday this week, we have entered the season of Lent. Just as Advent is the season of preparation prior to Christmas, Lent is a season of preparation prior to Easter. Its 40 days commemorate the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert fasting and praying in preparation for his Earthly ministry. Yes, between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday there are actually 47 days, but the Sundays didn’t count for fasting, which Christians traditionally did during this time. Historically, they were also meant to “give alms”, wear sackcloth, and spend much time in prayer and self-denial. John Calvin however, didn’t have have a lot of use for these rules and actually called the strict practices of Lent “superstitious observance”. Now we use this time to reflect, perhaps to join a Lenten study, and prepare out hearts for the glorious celebration of Easter.

This Sunday, we welcome Julielee Stitt back to our pulpit. She will speak about Lent and the gift of “more”.

“But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.”

2 Corinthians 4:7-12

Find the Miracle Deep in your Heart. Ros. Schwartz 2018

“Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods?
Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
awesome in splendour, doing wonders?”

-Exodus 15:11

Last week, the Rev. Dr. Paul Kern spoke about Jesus’ first miracle, and how it related to the timeline of His ministry. This week, we continue on the theme of the miraculous, but through a different lens. Dr. Roslyn Schwartz will be speaking about finding miracles within.
