Do you notice that the St. Andrew’s sign has been edited?

No more ‘Presbyterian Church’, and instead … ‘School for Saints’!

These weeks of May we are exploring some of the images gleaned from scripture that might help us understand ourselves better as ‘church’. This morning our focus in scripture and sermon is upon the both the teaching/learning dimension of our life together – ‘school’ – and upon the dynamics of sanctification – our growth as ‘saints’.

Organ preludes will begin around 10:25 a.m. and the service will commence at 10:30 a.m. This is the link for this morning’s service is https://youtu.be/POcakIOcTaY  Previous services can be found on the St. Andrew’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/StAndrewsPresbyterianChurchKingston

We begin this Sunday by singing a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 48, ‘Within your temple Lord, your praises we will tell’.

We are blessed by this ‘temple’ at the corner of Princess and Clergy Streets … the limestone solid, the stained glass windows bathing us in colour, the pews gently curved and bringing us together around table, font and pulpit. Within this temple we are surely encouraged to tell the praises and know the promises of God.

But there is another dynamic at work as well. As we gather to praise God in this temple worked by human hands, we are reminded that God wills to work us together to be a people of God.

These weeks of May we are exploring some of the images of the Church found in the New Testament, and this morning our focus is upon the exhortation … ‘like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house’ (1 Peter 1:5).

Baptismal font in St. Andrew’s

‘He took them up into his arms and blessed them’ (Mark 10:16).

These are the words that surround the top of baptismal font of St. Andrew’s, and they shall be very much before us all this Sunday.

We will gather to celebrate the baptism of Emery. We will remember our own baptism. And we will rejoice for Emery and ourselves how Christ has adopted us as his brothers and sisters and taken us up into the embrace of the Holy One. ‘Child of blessing, Child of promise’, each of us.

These weeks of May we are exploring some of the images of the Church found in the New Testament, and this morning the focus is upon the gospel assurance and challenge of being ‘the family of God’!

Painting in the style of a Greek medieval religious icon.

Now let the vault of heaven resound,
in praise of love that doth abound.
Christ hath triumphed, hallelujah.

As we continue in the joy of this season of Easter, we will explore through May some of the images of the Church that come to us from the New Testament. We begin this morning with one from our Lord himself, ‘I am the vine, you are the branches’ (John 15:5).

And as it is the first Sunday of the month, we will also be celebrating the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. You are invited to bring your own bread and wine/juice, or pick up a pre-packaged unit as you enter the sanctuary. This a time and means of grace ‘for those who love the Lord a little, and yearn to love him more.’

We continue to follow the story of the first Easter from the Gospel according to Luke, with the ‘Walk to Emmaus’ (Luke 24:13-35). It is a wonderful narrative that speaks of lives changed by the Risen Lord, then and now.

One of the hymns we will sing this Sunday is a prayer that surely we all lift up –
‘Come to us, beloved Stranger, as you came that Easter day.
Walk with us to our Emmaus, for we need you still today
Stay with us and give us blessing, that our hopes again may rise’

The sermon will inquire of our own journeys of faith, and be offered by Julielee Stitt as she sets out to discern a call to ministry.

Jesus Christ is risen today, hallelujah!
Our triumphant holy day, hallelujah!
Hymns of praise let us sing, hallelujah!
Unto Christ our heavenly King, hallelujah!

Easter Sunday!

Whether at home or in the sanctuary, we will be joining our choir in singing joyous hymns praise. This is the day on which Christian faith begins. This is the day that sustains Christians all their days. This is the day that declares the promise to which all Christians look forward.
