Over the past two years, members of our congregation and our families have gone ahead of us. Many of us were unable to gather to give God thanks, or to gather with limitations of location and numbers.
St. Andrew’s held a service on Saturday April 9 to look back, bring our gratitude to God, and be strengthened by God’s promises. It was a very moving hour.

The movement of this scene is wonderful.
Varghese was a Malaysian artist who often painted from her deep Christian faith. Like in this painting. Jesus is at the centre, but where is headed, to whom is he travelling? This is not just ‘the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem’ – I feel Varghese challenging me to consider ‘the entry of Jesus into my life’.

French Cross. Alex Colville. 1988
A rider passing by a monument erected on the spot from which the Acadians were deported in 1755. I find this painting by Alex Colville very moving.
After graduating with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Mount Allison University, Colville enlisted in the infantry in 1942 and served in France and the Netherlands. Among his assignments, he was tasked with depicting the horrors of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Colville went on to become one of Canada’s great artists, a prominent member of the Maritime Realism school that countered the contemporary reign of abstract painting.
Colville paints this rider looking back over her shoulder, as if perhaps to suggest the way he yearns to come to terms with his own history, including the terror and tragedy of war. As do we all.
What to make of the fact that it is a cross that was raised by the descendants of the Acadians, and painted by the artist? I invite you to explore this question with me in a sermon that focuses upon Hebrews 2.

So why is an eagle portrayed looking down over John as he records his account of the gospel of Jesus Christ?
This month we are exploring the various gospel accounts of the New Testament – each attempting to describe the Risen Lord with a different perspective upon the earthly witness of Jesus, and each traditionally symbolized by a traditional image. This week – the Gospel according to John, and the eagle.
It only takes just under two hours to read through the Gospel according to John, or to listen to it read by Julielee at https://www.standrewskingston.org/the-gospels-read-john/ What a wonderful experience! In the journey, I feel a particular intimacy and strength of the presence of the Living Lord. And maybe you might glean an idea about why the eagle, also!

Each of the weeks of March, we have been reading one of the gospels of the New Testament in preparation for the following Sunday service. This final week our focus is upon the Gospel according to John.

St. Luke the Evangelist. By a follower of Jacob Jordaens, 1593-1678
So why is an ox portrayed looking down over Luke as he records his account of the gospel of Jesus Christ? The look of those large brown eyes remind me of other oxen I have seen painted into scenes of the birth of that same Jesus, but perhaps now with less wonder and more reflection. This ox may have been associated with the Gospel according to Luke because his account begins with Zechariah in the temple of Jerusalem with its animal sacrifices … but I would suggest the ox refers also to the Christ of whom Luke writes during his earthly ministry. Why? How? That is the topic of this Sunday’s sermon!
