A service of thanksgiving to God for the life of Bev Wells will be held on Saturday January 29, 2 p.m. You are invited to participate either in-person or on-line.

Participation In-Person
The service will be held in the sanctuary of St. Andrew’s Church, with face masking and physical distancing observed. Byzantine Mosaic of Christ Pantocrator, Church of the Holy Saviour, Chora Istanbul

Oh my. I lost track of time and almost neglected to post this link to Sunday’s service. And it is a bit ironic, given a theme weaving through the service is to be ‘time’!

‘For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven …’
‘A thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past …’
‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and for ever’

If you stand in the very centre of the great Byzantine sanctuary of the Coptic church in Chora, Istanbul and look up, you gaze upon this amazing mosaic of Jesus the Christ. He holds the scriptures that point to himself, the Living Word. The orb of light that surrounds his head includes portions of his cross, empty, pointing to his defeat of sin and death. His hand is raised in a very particular benediction – thumb and two fingers joined to remind us of the Community of Love that is the Triune God, two fingers pointing to the eternal character of Jesus who brought the Holy One to us but also took our humanity into the Divine Life.

Jesus, at the centre of time and meaning … and life.

This banner has welcomed the congregation of St. Andrew’s ever since the present sanctuary was raised in 1890. It declares a phrase that is heard several times in scripture. But what does it mean? What is the point of this invitation/exhortation? The sermon this morning will explore these words (Psalm 96:9) and conclude with a final Epiphany hymn

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness,
Bow down in reverence, God’s glory to proclaim;
gold of obedience and incense of lowliness
bring now, adoring the Lord’s holy name.

This is a wonderful morning for this congregation – we will be gathered by the Holy Spirit not only in worship, but also to ordain and induct four individuals who have been discerned with spiritual gifts for leadership among us as Elders.

‘Standing at the portal of the opening year,
words of comfort meet us hushing every fear,
spoken through the silence by God’s loving voice,
tender, strong and faithful, making us rejoice.
Onward then, and fear not, children of the day,
for God’s word shall never, never pass away.’

And ‘words of comfort’ we receive indeed!

We will celebrate the arrival of the magi before the Christ Child, and recognize how we have been led to faith along our own journeys. We will hear the Risen Christ declare ‘I am … the bright morning star’ heralding the dawn of resurrection and peace (Revelation 22:16), and praised in a classic Epiphany hymn. We will share in Holy Communion with the Holy One who binds all the years and peoples together and is at work to bring good out of evil and life out of death (so you are invited to prepare some bread and a cup in advance of this service).

          Jesus the Christ: Incarnate and Transcendent

The Sunday after Christmas. An opportunity to put the nativity stories and carols into perspective for a deeper, broader understanding of Jesus the Christ. And as it is also St. Stephen’s Day, the service will include ‘Good King Wenceslas’!

We welcome back the Revs. Heather and Paul Kern to lead us in worship this morning. Both Heather and Paul work with Corrections Canada in chaplaincy. In light of the rising number of covid cases in the region and province, and upon a recommendation from the Safe Facilities Committee of Session, the Elders of St. Andrew’s have made this afternoon the difficult decision to pause in-person worship services until further notice.

The decision to pause in-sanctuary worship is effective immediately, including tomorrow, Sunday December 19, as well as the Christmas Eve service.
