St. Luke the Evangelist. By a follower of Jacob Jordaens, 1593-1678

So why is an ox portrayed looking down over Luke as he records his account of the gospel of Jesus Christ? The look of those large brown eyes remind me of other oxen I have seen painted into scenes of the birth of that same Jesus, but perhaps now with less wonder and more reflection. This ox may have been associated with the Gospel according to Luke because his account begins with Zechariah in the temple of Jerusalem with its animal sacrifices … but I would suggest the ox refers also to the Christ of whom Luke writes during his earthly ministry. Why? How? That is the topic of this Sunday’s sermon!

This month we are exploring the various gospel accounts of the New Testament – each attempting to describe the Risen Lord with a different perspective upon the earthly witness of Jesus, and each traditionally symbolized by a traditional image. This week – the Gospel according to Luke, and the ox.

The sanctuary doors are open for in-person worship (with physical distancing and wearing of masks), and for the first time in over two years we will be able to join our cantors in singing the hymns! Live-streaming continues. Organ preludes will begin around 10:25 a.m. and the service will commence at 10:30 a.m. The link to the livestream can be found at https://youtu.be/txDHcZ1llPs. Previous services can be found on the St. Andrew’s Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/StAndrewsPresbyterianChurchKingston

Matthew. Franz Hals, 1625; Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art

I was very moved when I came across this painting. I was looking through art across the ages that meant to convey the gospel writer Matthew. I love Franz Hals, and I have ever since I was introduced to his work during a bicycle tour of Europe the summer before entering university, when Thom and I stumbled across and into the Franz Hals Museum in Haarlem, Netherlands. But what made this painting particularly meaningful this week is that it hangs in a Museum in Odessa, Ukraine.

This month we are exploring the various gospel accounts of the New Testament – each attempting to describe the Risen Lord with a different perspective upon the earthly witness of Jesus, and each traditionally symbolized by a traditional image.

This week – the Gospel according to Matthew, and the image is a ‘living creature with the face of a human’. It is the humanity of Jesus that Matthew emphasizes. It is also the humanity to which his followers are called. This canvas hanging in Odessa and surrounded this day by violence and death calls out all the more urgently for us to heed the witness of Matthew, and the call of Christ, and allow God to grow us in the ways of true humanity.

We will conclude the hour by celebrating the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper – all who ‘love the Lord a little and yearn to love him more’ are invited to participate.

The sanctuary doors are open for in-person worship (with physical distancing, wearing of masks and forgoing congregational singing). Live-streaming continues. Praying for UkraineThe Presbyterian Church in Canada joins in prayer with our partners in Ukraine as they and all around them are faced with war, danger and uncertainty. We pray for safety and peace, comfort for those now in mourning, and humanitarian aid for all in need.

God and Lord of the Powers, and Maker of all creation;
God of justice, and Lover and Maker of peace,
we are distressed by the violence and the threats of violence and destruction in the world, and especially by acts of war and brutality that people experience in Ukraine.
In solidarity with them, we pray for those
who are suffering and in danger,
who live in fear and anxiety,
who fear what tomorrow will bring,
who are anxious for their lives and the lives of those they love and care for, and
who mourn the dead.
We pray that
those with power over war will lay down weapons,
and that those who have power to accomplish peace
will have wisdom and compassion.
God of Grace, the Giver of Life,
send your Comforter, the Spirit of Truth,
who is everywhere present and fills all things,
to sustain the hope of all those who seek justice and peace and
to inspire the leaders of nations to do what is right.
Glory to you, O God,
Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit,
now and forever;
in the strong name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, we pray.
Amen.

“The World Council of Churches denounces any and every use of deadly armed force to resolve disputes that could be resolved by dialogue. We firmly believe that dialogue—based on the principles of international law and respect for established national borders—was and is the proper path for the resolution of tensions surrounding Ukraine. We call for an immediate end to the current armed hostilities, and for the protection of all human lives and communities threatened by this violence. We urge all member churches and all people of good will around the world to join us in prayer for peace for the people of Ukraine and the region.”
—The Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca, Acting General Secretary, World Council of Churches
