“So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”     2 Corinthians 5:17-20
 
Welcome and thank you to our interim moderator, the Rev Marianne Emig Carr, who is leading the service today. After a successful 20-year legal career at General Motors, Marianne felt a “not so gentle” nudge from God to revisit her calling to the ministry. She returned to school and graduated with a Master of Divinity from Knox College. She is now minister at the First Brockville and St. Paul’s Caintown Pastoral charge.

“Then the son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” But the father said to his slaves, “Quickly, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!” And they began to celebrate.”     Luke 15:21-23.
 
This is a special Sunday – Mother’s Day, a Baptism, and Communion! Rev. Heather Kern speak to us about how women, made in God’s image, are also an example of the love of God. She will also officiate at Communion. We continue to provide individual, sealed Communion packets as you enter the sanctuary. Alternatively, we encourage you to bring your elements from home to use during the service. And if you are joining online, perhaps take a moment before the service to prepare a cup and some bread, so that you may commune with us.
The Rev. Dr. Paul Kern will be officiating the baptism.  
We are enormously grateful to Paul, and Heather Kern, for guiding our worship on the first two Sundays of every month during this time of transition.  Their words and presence are a blessing to us.

“When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, ‘Lord, my servant is lying at home paralysed, in terrible distress.’ And he said to him, ‘I will come and cure him.’ The centurion answered, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, “Go”, and he goes, and to another, “Come”, and he comes, and to my slave, “Do this”, and the slave does it.’ When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, ‘Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ And to the centurion Jesus said, ‘Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.’ And the servant was healed in that hour.” Matthew 8:5-13
 
Is it possible to amaze God? Apparently it is, when you believe Jesus is the Second Member of the Godhead. This Sunday we will be looking at a story where a soldier of high rank encountered Jesus… and amazed him:
– with a caring heart (for a servant)
– with a contrite heart (he knew his place)
– with his faith (of course)
We can’t impress God with rank, or social status, but by being caring, contrite, faithful people of God.
 
The Rev. Dr. Paul Kern will again be leading our service this morning.  We are enormously grateful to Paul, and his wife, the Rev Heather Kern, for guiding our worship on the first two Sundays of every month during this time of transition.  Their words and presence are a blessing to us. 
 
This week we are also hosting some cadets from the Royal Military College, in the tradition of Copper Sunday. They will participate by speaking, playing music, reading and……tossing pennies into the collection plate!

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. If any of you put a stumbling-block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea.”     ~Matthew 18:3-6

 
Ever wonder what Jesus meant when he said this? All our lives we try to be good adults, and then we’re told that we have to be like children to enter the kingdom of heaven! I have worked with children my entire life, and after being with them, and learning from them, learning with them, I think I am finally beginning to understand that Jesus was talking about the uncomplicated and joyful way in which children embrace life, and that perhaps we can apply this to our own faith.

This morning we welcome the Rev. Mark Kotchapaw to lead our worship. Mark asks: “Ever been stretched, faced difficulties, perhaps even persecution?” This week we will look at how Paul reminds us that not only did Jesus see a harvest come from His suffering, but we can too! When we get stretched, we can grow!
