This Sunday, Julielee Stitt, a member of our congregation, and theological student at Presbyterian College Montreal, will be leading our worship service. She gives us the following teaser for her message…

“The Bible is an ancient text. And yet, through divine inspiration, it continues to impart loving wisdom that can help guide us in living a good life, aligned with our Creator. In today’s message, we look at what scripture tells us about communication and how it can draw us closer to each other and God. We’ll also pull the curtain back on the greatest love letter of all time. (Hint: you won’t find it in a shoebox of keepsakes.)”

Organ preludes will begin around 10:25 a.m. and the service will commence at 10:30 a.m. This is the link for this morning’s service is  https://youtu.be/Nplta1UBCFc   Previous services can be found on the St. Andrew’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/StAndrewsPresbyterianChurchKingston

This Sunday the Rev. Nancy Hancock, a retired Presbyterian minister and elder in our congregation, will be leading our worship service. Nancy is also a champion of Presbyterian World Service and Development, and will speak to us about mission in the church.

2 Corinthians 5:21. He Bore our Sin

“For my people are foolish, they do not know me.” Jeremiah 4:22
“I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” 1 Timothy 1:13-14

How did we get from the foolishness described in Jeremiah, to the praise expressed in Timothy?

Join us this Sunday as Rev. Heather Kern leads us on a journey – a progression of the Scriptures – from God lamenting and calling out his children, through repentance, to our praising God for our forgiveness.

“When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith towards the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother. For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love. And I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus.” ~Philemon 1:4-10

Free at last? Not so fast! Aches, pains and restrictions are a part of life. We all are chained to attitudes, belief systems and habit. The weight of these is insidious and draining. Releasing the slave is a constant need, and a gift from God.
We invite you to join us on Sunday as we ponder this truth. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Sinclair, Minister Emeritus of Metropolitan United Church on Toronto, will be leading the service.

Being the first Sunday in September, as is the tradition at St. Andrew’s, we will also be celebrating Holy Communion. We continue to provide individual, sealed Communion packets as you enter the sanctuary. Alternatively, we encourage you to bring your elements from home to use during the service. And if you are joining online, perhaps take a moment before the service to prepare a cup and some bread, so that you may commune with us.

“Let mutual love continue.” Hebrews 13:1
The Dark Ages. The Renaissance. Pax Romana. Only future generations can name our era – we are simply living it. What will future generations name us? What will be the hallmark of this age? What is the best kind of era for communities of faith to live and work and thrive?
We invite you to join us on Sunday as we ponder these questions. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Sinclair, Minister Emeritus of Metropolitan United Church on Toronto, will be leading the service.

This week we gather with our partner churches in the Downton Kingston Ecumenical Collective for a joint, outdoor service at Lake Ontario Park – 920 King St. W. The churches involved are St. James (Anglican) St. Paul’s (Anglican), St. Mark’s (Lutheran), Sydenham St. (United) Faith (United), and us – St. Andrew’s Presbyterian! The service will begin at 10:30, and the speaker will be the Rev. Catherine Elsdon of Sydenham St. United.

Livestreaming this event is not feasible, so instead we are rebroadcasting the “now complete” service from July 24, which accidentally cut out part way through on it’s original date.

We will be back in the sanctuary next Sunday, August 28.

The Hand of God. Yongsung Kim. Havenlight Christian Artwork

“Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’”  ~Matthew 14:28-32

This is one of those amazing encounters individuals and groups had with Jesus as recounted in the Bible. Jesus walking on water! Impossible we say. And then helping Peter to do the same! Even more impossible. And rescuing him when he faltered! Impossible yet again! This painting by Yongsung Kim, from the perspective of the sinking Peter, is such a tender, personal and intimate portrait of Jesus: still impossibly standing on water, but reaching down to save each of us from drowning. Sometimes it seems like the “impossible” doesn’t happen anymore. Or does it? Join Rev. Dr. Paul Kern as we worship and look at how to encounter Jesus doing the impossible, today, in our lives and ministries. Perhaps it is as “simple” as listening for Jesus’ voice, acting out his commands, keeping our focus on him, and grasping to the hand reaching down to us.
