Augustine and his mother, Monica – St. Augustine’s Church, Washington D.C, USA

As a Christian community looking forward to the lifting of pandemic restrictions and ‘beginning again’, we are considering four scenes of the very first beginnings of the Church.

This week we will be introduced to Augustine of Hippo, North Africa (354 – 430 A.D.). He became a Christian out of the witness of his mother Monica, and a leader of the Christians of his era. In particular we will consider how as a Christian he responded to the trauma of the fall of Rome, and what we gain from his witness today.

The sanctuary doors are open for in-person worship (with physical distancing, wearing of masks and forgoing congregational singing), and live-streaming continues. We invite you to join us in prayer and praise. Organ preludes will begin around 10:25 a.m. and the service will commence at 10:30 a.m. The livestream can be found at https://youtu.be/409hIcVRVuM . Previous services can be found on the St. Andrew’s Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/StAndrewsPresbyterianChurchKingston

Have a look at the Order of Service, Notes of the Director of Music, scripture readings, hymn lyrics and announcements below – the electronic form includes hyperlinks for easy connection, and you can print them out if you wish for reference as the hour unfolds, or even through the week. Please join in worship, study and service as you are able.

Immediately after the service, we will continue with our annual general meeting. All members and adherents are invited to join by Zoom – your comments and questions will be relayed to those in the sanctuary, and your votes counted along with those voting in person … https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81854705429?pwd=cG5QY2FjWXl6KzJVSGxQMytVUVlJQT09

From the book ‘Desert Wisdom’ by Yushi Nomura

As we look forward to the lifting of pandemic restrictions and ‘beginning again’ as a Christian community, we are considering four scenes of the very first beginnings of the Church.

This week we will be introduced to the wisdom gained by certain women and men of the fourth century. They were not willing (as were so many others) to leave the formulation and articulation of the faith to ‘the Church’. They desired a personal experience of God and God’s Word, and so removed themselves to live in hermit communities in the deserts of Egypt. They came to be known as the Desert Fathers and Mothers, and I believe there is much for us to glean from their experience us as we reconsider our calling as Christians.

This Sunday the sanctuary doors will again be open for in-person worship (with physical distancing, wearing of masks and forgoing congregational singing), but live-streaming will continue. We invite you to join us in prayer and praise. Organ preludes will begin around 10:25 a.m. and the service will commence at 10:30 a.m. The livestream can be found at https://youtu.be/TCL9bDJjpbo Previous services can be found on the St. Andrew’s Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/StAndrewsPresbyterianChurchKingston

Have a look at the Order of Service, Notes of the Director of Music, scripture readings, hymn lyrics and announcements below – you can print them out if you wish and refer to them as the hour unfolds, or even through the week. Please join in worship, study and service as you are able.

Immediately after the service, enjoy a time of online after-service conversation and fellowship with others Sunday morning at 11:45 a.m. Here’s the link! https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81854705429?pwd=cG5QY2FjWXl6KzJVSGxQMytVUVlJQT09

As we look forward to the lifting of pandemic restrictions and ‘beginning again’, we are considering four scenes of the very first beginnings of the Church.

This morning, the story of Perpetua, a young woman of Carthage in the great city of Carthage North Africa at the beginning of the third century. She is a Christian, not by birth but by conversion. She lives during a time when Christians are not understood and are indeed persecuted. Perpetua was a ‘witness’, a ‘martyr’, even to death, shown here with her loyal servant and fellow Christian martyr, Felicity. ‘The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church’.

One of the hymns of our service this morning is also from the third century, praise from the pen of Clement of Alexandria (170-220 A.D.) – ‘Jesus, our mighty Lord, our strength in sadness, the Father’s conquering Word, true source of gladness’.

As we recall Perpetua and so many like her, surely we ask … What is our Christian witness in this time and place? What sort of witnesses to Christ are we?

We invite you to join us in prayer and praise by live-stream at https://youtu.be/qKlSZsve8Tg. Lydia of Thyatira by Sarah Beth Baca

As we look forward to beginning again ‘after the pandemic’, I thought I might share four scenes of the first beginning of the Church. This morning, the story of the first Christian on the shores of Europe, Lydia of Philippi (Acts 16).

The music of our worship will include a metrical psalm of old ‘Oh come and sing unto the Lord’, a song that many of us were first introduced to at youth group or camp ’Seek ye first the kingdom of God’, and a prayer set to music ‘May the mind of Christ our Saviour live in me from day to day’.

We will conclude the hour by celebrating the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, so you are invited to prepare some bread and a cup as the service begins.

We invite you to join us in prayer and praise by live-stream at https://youtu.be/YU0DVdMwj3w. Organ preludes will begin around 10:25 a.m. and the service will commence at 10:30 a.m. Previous services can be found on the St. Andrew’s Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/StAndrewsPresbyterianChurchKingston
