The Supper at Emmaus. Matthias Stom c.1632-39

” Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers.” ~Hebrews 13:1-2

We welcome you to our Sunday service, in-person or online. We hope that how ever you worship, you feel that you are a part of our community of faith. When we gather we become the body of Christ and can work together to offer hope to those in need of it the most. As a community we care for each other and are stronger with the Spirit directing us all.

This week we will be looking at the idea of hospitality. What does it take to be included? Do we expect people to be like us to belong or is there room for us to learn from others?  There’s an old axiom of 3 B-words when it comes to being part of a faith community: Believe, Behave, Belong. This implies that to to truly be part of the community, first we must believe the doctrine, then behave according to the “rules” of the faith group, and then finally we can belong to the community. But perhaps this order is confused. Perhaps we should belong first, then grow to deeply believe, and then finally, after time, change our behaviour as necessary. Too often in becoming part of the church we expect others to change to fit our normal, instead of teaching and learning from each other. And of course, when we learn from Jesus, we all gain new life.
